AROMATHERAPY ADVENTURES: EXPLORING HYDROLATS

This month I have been delving deeper into the world of Hydrolats, also known as Floral Waters or Hydrosols. Often considered a by-product of essential oil production, these fragrant and therapeutic waters are equally (if not more) useful in day-to-day life.

What are Hydrolats?

Hydrolats are created when plant matter is steam distilled whether for the primary purpose of harvesting the precious essential oils or specifically to produce the hydrolat.

Many of the therapeutic properties of the plant remains in the hydrolat but without the highly concentrated chemical compounds of the essential oil making the waters a gentle alternative that is safer for use on children and infants, for undiluted use on the skin and they can also be taken internally, unlike the essential oils.

However, as with essential oils, it is important to source good quality, organic, sustainably sourced unadulterated hydrosols, especially if you are looking to use them internally.

Examples of Use

I’m really excited about the extra possibilities working with hydrolats opens up to me as a Clinical and Formulating Aromatherapist. They can be used direct on the skin as a spritz or gentle toner, used individually or combined with other hydrolats. When making bespoke skincare preparations, I will use a hydrolat in place of distilled water to enhance the therapeutic and aromatic qualities of the product.

Cooling and refreshing waters of Rose & Peppermint spritzed on the scalp and skin will offer relief in  hot weather (and from hot flushes!), whilst a soothing blend of Chamomile and Lavender waters can be applied to a baby’s bottom to calm nappy rash.

A spritz to the feet can refresh, revive and deodorise whilst a blend of witch hazel, peppermint and blue chamomile could soothe irritation from insect bites, sunburn or nettle rash.

Added to drinking water and sipped throughout the day, the internal use of Hydrolats may help ease digestive discomfort, manage symptoms of stress and hormonal imbalances and support a good night’s sleep. Add a little Neroli Hydrolat to drinking water to help instil a sense of calm in times of stress.

The possibilities really are endless!
